Make sure the gift card is not expired! Gift card collectors often buy expired cards or cards with no value, unless you are looking to collect gift cards, rather than use them to buy things, pay extra attention when cards collectible
Make sure what you are buying is really a gift card, and not a coupon. We automatically exclude listings that mention coupons in the title, but read the whole listing carefully so you don't end up with three $10 off $50+ coupons instead of a real $30 gift card you were expecting.
Check restrictions and limits on the gift card. You should be aware of any special restrictions or limits on how the gift card can be used. Some times these include a minimum purchase requirments, rules that prevent to be cards from being combined and location restrictions. Be sure to ask.

When you get your gift card, it is best to check the balance as soon as possible. If you spend the whole thing right away that is the easiest, but if you plan to keep it (or only use a portion) take it to a store, or go online transfer the balance to a new card if possible. Once you use your discounted gift card don't recharge it. Get a fresh one. This protects you buy giving you a new number.
Some companies charge fees on gift cards after periodically as they age, so use the card you get quickly and buy a new one when you need it.
